Documentary on immigrant women to be screened at EHU

A documentary film about the lives of immigrants in Lithuania will be screened for the EHU community on December 4. Presented in cooperation with the University’s Center for Gender Studies, the screening will be followed by a discussion with the film’s Lithuanian director, Aistė Ptakauskė.

The film Ethnic Kitchen follows the stories of five women who came to Lithuania from different countries, at different times, and for different reasons. Actress Alicia arrived from the United States as part of a student exchange program and found love. Chechen diplomat Aminat could not return to Grozny after an official visit to Vilnius because of an assault on the town. Keisha, an engineer who has worked in Afghanistan, Jamaica, and Zambia, came to Lithuania to study for a master’s degree. Marisa from Uruguay returned to the land of her forebears with four children. Lithuania-born Božena swallowed many a bitter pill for being a Roma, but her persistence prevented her from breaking down.

At first glance, the life stories of these women seem unbelievable, but a closer look reveals that their stories could happen to any of us. How do we construct the world we call home? Does it stem from our place in society based on gender, race, age, or nationality? Or is it something more simple than that? Could it be that home is any place where we find compassion, inspiration, talent, love, and a shared humanity?

Ethnic Kitchen is not just a movie: it’s an invitation to reflect on the things that make us feel like outsiders. It encourages us to extend a helping hand to those who cannot seem to find a place in our society.

The screening will take place on campus in Room 205 (Valakupių 5) on December 4 at 6 p.m.
