International Round Table “Politics of decommunitisation. Experience of Eastern and Central Europe”

Wilfried Martens Center for European Studies (Belgium) and the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (Belarus), with the participation of the European Humanities University, are implementing a common project “Communist heritage in Belarus and EU countries: problems of interpretation and relevance of preservation”. Three round tables are planned within the project framework. On June 16, the third round table on the topic “Politics of decommunitisation. Experience of Eastern and Central Europe” will be held.

During the round table experts from Lithuania, Slovak Republic, Russia, Ukraine, Moldova and Belarus will share their opinions on the topic.

Programme of the event:

  • 13:10 – 13:30 “Slovakia – a difficult case of de-communization”. Juraj Marušiak, PhD (Slovak Republic);
  • 13:30 – 13:50 “Decommunization and the Historical Policy of AntiCommunism in the Republic of Moldova in the 2010s”. Alexandr Voronovici, PhD (Moldova/Russia);
  • 13:50 – 14:10 “Leaving the USSR: decommunization in Ukraine as politics and practice”. Yana Prymachenko, PhD (Ukraine);
  • 14:10 – 14:20 Break;
  • 14:20 – 14:40 “The Struggle for History as a Paradigm of the Historical Process: From the USSR to Putinism”. Irina Flige (Russia);
  • 14:40-15:00 “The fate of the Soviet heritage in Belarus: continuity, selection, recontextualization?” Aliaksei Bratachkin (Belarus);
  • 15:00 – 15:30 Discussion.

Three round tables are planned within the project framework. On April 29, the first round table on the topic “Soviet heritage: monuments, toponymy, architecture. Conservation? Interpretation? Liquidation?” will be held.

During the round table, the issue of the practice of decommunization of the cultural landscape in Eastern Europe, the goals and limitations of such a policy will be considered, as well as the prospects for dealing with the Soviet heritage in Belarus.
