Norway joins donors of the EHU Emergency Fund for supporting students from Belarus

The Belarusian University-in-Exile in Vilnius, which earlier has announced the establishment of the Emergency Fund for supporting at-risk students from Belarus, welcomes the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Norway joining Fund’s donors’ list.

Thanks to the grant of ca. €47 000 Eur (500 000 NOK), even more students from Belarus will be able to continue their students in the environment of academic freedoms and liberal arts-driven model of education, as offered by the European Humanities University (EHU).

A special agreement determining Norway’s contribution to the EHU Emergency Fund was signed by University Rector Prof. Sergei Ignatov and Ambassador of Norway to Lithuania and Belarus Ole Terje Horpestad.

University Rector expressed gratitude to the Ambassador of Norway for the support and has expressed hope that cooperation between EHU and Norway will grow further. It is notable that during the course of 15 years of operations in conditions of exile, the only independent Belarusian University has been privileged to receive the total support of over €3 400 000 from the Government of Norway.

Earlier it was announced that the Swedish Institute has provided an inaugural grant to the EHU Emergency Fund in the amount of ca. €100 000 Eur (1 000 000 SEK).

The leadership of EHU continues to negotiate with an international coalition of donors in order to raise additional funding for politically oppressed students from Belarus.
