EHU Center for Gender Studies contributed to filling the gender gap in the Belarusian Wikipedia

On April 8, the global campaign “WikiGap Challenge”, which took place on Wikipedia from March 8 to April 8, has ended. The campaign was focused on the reduction of the gender gap in the articles in the world’s largest virtual encyclopedia – Wikipedia. Lecturer of EHU, coordinator of the Center for Gender Studies Dr. Uladzislau Ivanou (pseudonym Uladzislau Harbacki) took an active part in the Challenge.

On April 10, representatives of the People’s Embassy of Belarus in Sweden announced the results of the campaign on the Belarusian-language Wikipedia. The winners of the #BelarusGap are:

  • In the category “For the largest number of articles created in this language section (Belarusian classical spelling Taraškievica) about women from any country” the award was given to the participant  Harbacki for the creation of 40 new articles;
  • In the category “For the largest number of improved articles in this language section (Belarusian classical spelling Taraškievica) about women from any country” the award was given to the participant Harbacki for the improvement of 15 articles;
  • In the category “For the largest number of articles created in other language sections about Belarusian women and women whose activities are relevant to Belarus” the award was given to Tomasz Bladyniec for creating 4 new articles in the Polish Wikipedia.

Sincere congratulations to the winners from the community of EHU!

Articles created by Dr. Uladzislau Ivanou were dedicated to Lithuanian female writers and translators; little-known Belarusian female poets and writers; female philosophers; female writers from other countries.

The campaign was organized at the initiative of the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with the support of the Swedish Embassies, the UN Human Rights Office, as well as volunteers and activists around the world.
