Member of the European Parliament Andrius Kubilius, Representative on Legal Affairs of the Office of Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya Siarhej Zikratski, Chargé d’affaires a.i. of the Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of Belarus, Head of Political, Economic, Press and Information section Evelina Schulz and Acting Director of the Development Cooperation Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania Mindaugas Kačerauskis delivered welcoming addresses to the participants of the Discussion.
The representatives of the International Committee for the Investigation of Torture in Belarus, the Legal Commission of the Belarusian Helsinki Committee, the Human Rights Center “Viasna”, Center of Constitutionalism and Human Rights of the European Humanities University, former justices of Constitutional Court of the Republic of Belarus as well as practicing lawyers participated in discussions on “How to Create and Keep the Democratic Constitution and Democratic Practice?” and “Delayed Justice — Past, Present and Future for Belarus” that were moderated by associate analyst of the Eastern Europe Studies Center Maksimas Milta and the representative of the International Committee for the Investigation of Torture in Belarus Viktoria Fedorova.
The Head of the Law and Democracy Center Dainius Žalimas has stressed: “Democracy and law are inseparable. Law cannot be considered real if democratic values are not being protected by it. The aim of the Law and Democracy Center is to achieve justice, so that everyone who commits crimes against humanity wouldn’t escape punishment for their crimes, as well as to provide expert assistance on ways of democratization of Belarus and reformation of its legal system”.
Law and Democracy Center (Justice Hub) – is a public non-profit organization founded by the EHU, an initiative launched under a strong call to strengthen collective efforts using legal means for restoring justice for victims of human rights violations in Belarus. Its main mission is to support the implementation of universally recognized standards of justice and due process for victims of repressions by the current political regimes in Belarus and other post-soviet countries, as well as to provide expert assistance on the constitutional and democratic reforms in those countries.
