How do you understand and preserve your family’s history? You will get all the answers in the course “My Family’s Heritage: How to Understand and Preserve”

European humanities university and study programs “European heritage and creative tourism” and “Cultural heritage development” announce enrollment for the course “My family heritage: how to understand and preserve”, which will be taught by Paulina Skurko, PhD in History and EHU alumna.

What is the course about?

What is heritage? Castles and temples, holidays and rituals… But sometimes it is also something you could not have thought of. These are grandfather’s ties, student photos of your parents, a recipe for grandmother’s soup, family jokes. And also secrets, silence, fears that are passed down from generation to generation. All this you can put in a family museum.

Our history and our nation grow out from such “museums”. National and cultural identity is formed from the identities of individuals. We may not realize how much our roots influence our lives. Meanwhile, at its core lies the question “Who am I?”. A complete and detailed answer is the best gift you can give yourself!

During this course we are going to:

  • Discuss the influence of family traumas and secrets on our lives today;
  • Solve family mysteries, collect and capture the history of the family;
  • Read and write memories;
  • Analyze family photo albums and artifacts, geography and topography;
  • Analyze the historical context, describe the era, and learn to see ourselves in “big” history.
  • Master the genre of autoethnography, conduct self-study;
  • Learn write texts;
  • Work with oral history and history of memory.

Who can participate?

The course is designed for EHU undergraduate and graduate students, however it is also open to enrollee students and anyone interested in modern approaches to work with cultural heritage.

When and how will the course be held?

The course will be held from May 23 to June 27, 2025 in online format (through Zoom):

The final project created during the course can become a publication, speech topic, or simply an epochal stage in the development of your family museum.

Secondly, all participants who complete the course will receive a certificate that can be included in a portfolio to receive a grant, which covers tuition fees (also relevant for enrollees!).
