On December 10, the acceptance of applications for the Drahomán Prize-2022 for translators from the Ukrainian language into world languages, established in 2020 by the Ukrainian Institute, the Ukrainian PEN Center and the Ukrainian Book Institute, ended. Among the nominees is the Belarusian translator Assoc. Prof. Dr. Uladzislaŭ Ivanoŭ with a translation into Belarusian of the book “Бэйруцкія апавяданьні” by Ahatanhel Krymsky, the BUDZMA.ORG reports with reference to the Ukrainian PEN Center.
Along with Belarusian, the long list also includes translators into Finnish, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian, French, Lithuanian, Armenian, Polish, Macedonian, Bulgarian, and Georgian. Applications were received from 14 countries, including Bulgaria, Brazil, Great Britain, Armenia, Georgia, Italy, Canada, Lithuania, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, USA, Finland, and France.
The name of the laureate will be announced at a solemn ceremony, they will receive a statuette, a monetary award in the amount of 3,000 euros, as well as additional opportunities for work and presentation of their work.
The Belarusian publishing house Skaryna Press in London, which published Uladzislaŭ Ivanoŭ’s translation of Ahatanhel Krymsky’s “Бэйруцкія апавяданьні”, applied for participation in the competition. Ahatanhel Krymsky is a Ukrainian writer, historian, orientalist, organizer of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in 1918 and one of the most famous Ukrainian victims of Stalin’s repressions. It is known that he also had Belarusian roots: his great-grandfather lived in Barysaŭ, and his grandfather – in Mscislaŭ, Mahilioŭ region.
