EHU hosts the first student street theatre festival-laboratory “Out of context”

19-26 August The first student street theatre festival-lab “Out of Context” is taking place in Vilnius, in the courtyard of the European Humanities University (EHU). During the festival, there will be open lectures on various components of performance by renowned Lithuanian and Latvian theatre artists (Agnius Jankevičius, Birutė Kapustinskaitė, Antanas Jasenka, IevaKrish, etc.). Teams of students from different Vilnius universities, with the help of lecturers, will create the texts, set design, costumes and soundtracks for the upcoming performances, present them and the finished performance to the audience. Participants are invited to create their performances on the themes of history and poetics of everyday life.

All events are free of charge and will be mainly in English.

Our festival currently focuses on students with diverse university backgrounds and specialisations. We try to create a space where students can meet, make new connections, build new teams, try themselves in practice, have meaningful discussions about theatre and art, and talk about what we really care about. By organising the festival in English, foreigners living in Vilnius have the opportunity to get to know the local cultural scene better, and to facilitate their integration and full communication.

The festival is an experiment in terms of its format, the format of teamwork and the openness of the performance creation process. In the laboratory, the process will not follow the usual methodology where each part of the performance is created by different people at the same time, but where everything is created by a single team, day by day. The audience will be able to observe the group dynamics, the parallel development of ideas and the development of the participant groups. The festival raises the question of how closed the theatrical process should be, whether it is possible to think about the product separately from the process of its creation; the festival itself is a practice of such an open process.

The events will take place in the courtyard of Savičiaus 17, opposite the entrance from Bokšto str.

On 19 August, the first day of the festival, participants and spectators will get to know the phenomenon of street theatre.

-17:00 – a presentation of each team’s scripts for their future performances.

22 August will be dedicated to working with space.

-11:00 – a lecture by Paulius Ignatavičius on the last stage of the work on the play – the merging of its parts. Based on his own experience, Paulius will talk about the pitfalls, dangers and possibilities of this stage of the work, how not to lose sight of the original idea.
