Workshop “Mental Health in Academia”

Dear students, faculty, enrollees, representatives of civil society and all interested in the topic! Academic Department of Social Sciences, EHU American Center and American Councils warmly invite you to participate in the workshop “Mental Health in Academia”!

About? 

The workshop is dedicated to the problems of mental health in Academia in the context of relocating or temporary moving to another country, farewell to relatives,  forced emigration, psychological trauma due to Russian aggression against Ukraine and war as well as massive violations of human rights in Belarus.

During the event, speakers will present the point of view of different aspects of the academic process, civil society and professional psychology:

  • Yaroslava Melnik, EHU BA “Law” student.
  • Dr. Liliana Tymchenko, EHU associate professor.

Liliana Tymchenko has 29 years of experience in teaching international law. She is a graduate of the programs of the American Bar Association, IREX, Coimbra Group Hospitality Scheme, Civic Education Project with the focus on the quality of teaching and democratization of higher education. Currently, Liliana Tymchenko is an associate professor at the Academic Department of Social Sciences at the European Humanities University and a grantee of the 2-year long CLASP fellowship on writing-based, student-centred teaching and learning methods with the Institute for Writing and Thinking of the Bard College. Her research interests include studying the psychological aspects of teaching law and the culture of human rights.

  • Volha Vialichka, psychologist, one of the founders of the NGO “Doctors for Truth and Justice”. 

Volha Vialichka has a great practical experience in psychology, especially in relation to psychology of trauma, works with victims of human rights violations, their relatives and children.

Only in 2023, 2015 hours of work, 50 hours of supervision were worked out.

She is the author of two studies on penitentiary medicine and psychology, books and the written concept of the functioning of penitentiary medicine and psychology in Belarus.

  • American speaker Alexa Cruz.

She is a U.S. college student at Lehigh University studying Psychology and Art. She is currently in Vilnius as an Intern for the American Councils to advise students throughout the college experience and expose them to knowledge of what life is like as an American college student.

After the speakers’ presentations, a discussion among the participants will take place.
