The atmosphere has been introduced as a fundamental concept in aesthetics by the German philosopher Gernot Böhme. The intention is to characterize our presence in the environment, i.e. our sensorial and bodily existence rather than judgments of art and beauty. Such an approach is of interest for understanding the urban environment and for analysis and creation of an ambiance, where a multi-sensorial approach becomes essential. In short, a focus becomes space as affective, i.e. what it does to us and how we react to it and are influenced by it.
Carsten Friberg, Ph.D. (philosophy), has held different positions at Copenhagen University, Aarhus School of Architecture, Aalborg University and University of Southern Denmark. He is currently an independent scholar working as a teacher and external examiner, in collaboration with artists, and organizing research projects and events since 2016 in particular in the network ‘Appearances of the Political’.
The lecture will take place at 3 p.m. at EHU Campus (Saviciaus str. 17), room 110.
