Artemy Troitsky will give his view of “Russia Today” at EHU
Noted commentator on contemporary Russian culture, journalist, music critic and academic Artemy Troitsky will be featured in an EHU Public Conversation January 15 at 12:00 p.m. at Novotel Vilnius Centre.
The conversation, moderated by Dr. Darius Udrys, EHU Vice-Rector for Development and Communications, will focus on his experience as an art collector, music theorist, and authority in contemporary Russian culture. Troitsky will also share his views on public policy in Russia today and it’s relation to cultural expression.
Troitsky was born in 1955 in Yaroslavl, but spent most of his formative years in Prague. After moving back to Russia (then – USSR), in 1972 he became the first DJ in Moscow, when discotheques were not so familiar to Soviet youth.
His popularity grew quickly and, as a result, in 1974 he was invited to write about “decadent” western music for Soviet youth magazines and trendy newspapers, thereby becoming the country’s first rock journalist. In 1988 the New York Times described him as “the leading Soviet rock critic”.
In 1986, Troitsky was one of the organizers of the “Account No. 904” rock concert, modelled on Live Aid, which raised funds for victims of the Chernobyl disaster. It was the first such concert in the Soviet Union.
He is the recipient of numerous media and journalistic prizes, including the “Defender of a Free Russia” Medal—a state award of the Russian Federation in 1994. In 2011 he received the Finnish Tampere Music Award “For Outstanding Achievements in the Music Industry”.
Troitsky currently lives in Tallinn and lectures at Tallinn and Helsinki Universities. He has also taught music journalism at Moscow State University.
