Call for participants: free online course “Communication and Hate Speech and Hate Crime”

Academic Department of Social Sciences of the European Humanities University (EHU) in collaboration with partners from the United Kingdom, Denmark, Italy, Spain, Malta, Poland, Romania, Greece, and Cyprus issues a call for a free online course Communication and Hate Speech and Hate Crime.

The course is an integral part of the Project Creating Online Network, monitoring Team and phone App to Counter hate crime Tactics (C.O.N.T.A.C.T.), which is co-funded by the European Union.

The course Communication and Hate Speech and Hate Crime consists of six topics each of which is focused on different aspects of hate crime and hate speech. The first topic is devoted to the definitions of hate speech and hate crime, the second one focuses on the conceptual definitions of otherness and their impact on notions of nationality, ethnicity and race. The third topic is how to investigate hate speech. Here we pay special attention to the methodology of the CONTACT project and other European research on this topic. The last three topics are focused on the more specific targets of hate speech and hate crime, namely, LGBTQI people, women and recent targets of hate speech (refugees and migrants in particular).

NB! Application deadline is September 30. The language of instruction is English. The course will start on October 9.

Expected Outcomes of the course:

  • General theoretical understanding of the phenomena of hate speech and hate crime.
  • Development of a critical apparatus for analyzing hate speech and hate crime.
  • Completion of a practical-oriented task on media monitoring.

Participation Prerequisites:

  • Participants will need a good knowledge of English.
  • Ability to evaluate critically sensitive topics regarding identity.
  • General skills of critical approach to reading and writing.
  • To benefit from the course, a general interest in the topics of discrimination, hate speech and hate crime is essential.

The course will take place on EHU’s online learning platform Moodle

Participation in the online class is not restricted by time zone. Course content, forums and posts are all accessible to participants at any time of day. The participation in the course can take up to 6 hours during the week.

All course materials will be provided free-of-charge to admitted participants.

For the online course Communication and Hate Speech and Hate Crime an orientation emailwill be sent out to all accepted participants to guide them through signing up, logging in, interacting in the online space, and getting the most out of the online learning experience.

Students, activists, organizers, members of civil society, and journalists interested in hate speech and hate crime themes.

Graduate credits available

Participants may receive graduate credits (3 ECTS) from EHU, that may be transferable to one’s academic institution (please, check this possibility with your University).

In the notification email you should mention:

  • Your full name and surname
  • Email for registration in Moodle
  • Your current occupation and institution.

Acceptance to the course will be provided to the first 30 applicants (plus 5 applicants in the waiting list).
