The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sweden met with the leadership of EHU and held a meeting at Vilnius Town Hall

On November 21, 2023, as part of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sweden, Mr. Tobias Billström’s visit to Vilnius, he toured the European Humanities University (EHU), engaging in discussions with the institution’s leadership. Furthermore, he held a significant meeting at the Vilnius Town Hall.

The gathering, dedicated to addressing crucial international issues, was graced by the presence of distinguished guests, including Mr. Lars Wahlund, the Swedish Ambassador to Lithuania, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, the Head of the United Transitional Cabinet of Belarus, Professor Krzysztof Rybinski, Rector of the European Humanities University (EHU), and esteemed members of the EHU academic community.

During the meeting, Minister Billström introduced the Special Envoy for relations with democratic Belarus, Ms Christina Johannesson, who had previously served as Sweden’s ambassador to Belarus.

The meeting was significant in addressing the ongoing developments in Belarus, and it provided an opportunity for high-level diplomatic discussions. Minister Billström’s presence emphasized Sweden’s commitment to the region and its ongoing support for Belarus.

The minister mentioned that the European Humanities University was established during a period of optimism in the early 1990s to support the revival of European values during the transition to democracy. Its purpose was to educate a new generation of professionals capable of promoting democracy and human rights. The university was later forced to leave Belarus due to political pressure. The minister expressed his support for the university and recognized the importance of assisting those who have faced political persecution for their activism.

EHU, as a prominent institution, plays a crucial role in fostering dialogue and understanding in the region. The University has been fortunate to receive substantial support from Sweden, which is second only to the European Union. This meeting underscored the importance of such partnerships in advancing the University’s mission and addressing global challenges.

The EHU community was invited to witness this momentous event, and their participation showcased their deep appreciation for the Swedish government’s commitment to Belarus. It was an opportunity for students and faculty to engage with diplomats and global affairs experts.

At the end of the meeting, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya thanked Sweden and personally the Minister for the international efforts to support democratic transformations in Belarus.

The event at Vilnius Town Hall highlighted the unity and commitment of the EHU community to global affairs and its dedication to promoting freedom and democracy in Belarus.
