The session “Uses of Heritage” was the first encounter in the series of events dedicated to cultural heritage studies organised by Alina Kalachova, student of European Humanities University, program “European Heritage”, and Elena Bogdanova, Senior Lecturer in Sociology, Gothenburg University. This Study Circle is a continuation of the previous one “Creative practices as a tool to work with heritage”, some of the meetings of which happened at European Humanities University as well.

The event “Uses of Heritage” happened between 30 and 31 March 2023 at European Humanities University and gathered 18 people with heritage related expertise from various countries, including Netherlands, Italy, Belarus, Lithuania, Germany, Austria, Finland, Northern Ireland. The program consisted of such topics as “Videogame as a contemporary language to communicate heritage”, “Heritage of Colonialism: how to work with it”,  “Whose heritage and whose responsibility? Theoretical discourses”, “Heritage, inclusion, exclusion: collaborative ethnography and art-research, academic approaches”.

Participants were not only sharing their field of studies or work but also searching for the answers together on the following questions:

  • What are possible alternative or complementary understandings that might open more resources, practices and opportunities for heritage work?
  • How can the mundane, everyday practices and uses of heritage open for better representation of tangible and intangible objects, actors and practices of care?
  • Could heritage be researched and discussed without defining it and without losing the common ground?

The educational cycle of “Place of Heritage in Interdisciplinarity” is in the process. An open call for the next event which is going to take place on 27 July – 3 August 2023 is already published. Check the details
