Ambassador Per Carlsen obituary

With deep grief and sorrow, the European Humanities University informs about the sudden loss of Ambassador Per Carlsen, an outstanding diplomat and long-term supporter of the University, who has previously served as Chairman of the EHU Governing Board.

During his professional career, by virtue of serving as an Ambassador to Lithuania (1997-2001), Russia and Belarus (2005-2010), Latvia (2010-2015), Per Carlsen has become recognized as one of the most respected and renowned diplomats of Denmark. Until 2005, he has also led the Danish Institute for International Studies, one of the world’s top research institutes and think tanks. In recent years, Ambassador Carlsen has continued to be active in the field of international relations, serving at the Danish Foreign Policy Society.

Ambassador Carlsen joined EHU Governing Board in 2016 and held its Chairmanship until the end of the Board’s mandate in December 2019. On a later stage Ambassador Carlsen continued to support the Belarusian University-in-Exile as a member of the Friends of EHU group.

EHU community will remember the unique character of Ambassador Carlsen, combining determination with a sense of humor and wit. He was sincerely convinced of the democratic future of Eastern Europe.

Ambassador Carlsen passed away at the age of 72. The community of EHU mourns the irreparable loss for the University and expresses deep condolences to the family and friends of Per Carlsen.
