On January 23 at the World Economic Forum in Davos, the founder of the Open Society Foundations Mr. George Soros has announced the establishment of the Open Society University Network (OSUN), as a global collaboration of Universities advancing the promotion of liberal education, personal autonomy, and free society. European Humanities University joins the cohort of educational partners of OSUN together with 11 more Universities across the world.

OSUN is anchored by the Central European University and Bard College and integrates learning and the advancement of knowledge across geographic and demographic boundaries, promotes civic engagement on behalf of open societies and expands the access of underserved communities to higher education.

OSUN’s unique, ground-breaking model of global higher education will integrate teaching, research, and civic engagement across the network’s partner institutions.  This integration will take place through long-term partnerships that feature joint accreditation and mutual recognition of course credits and foster collaborative, interdisciplinary research to address critical global challenges, such as sustainability and open society.  Partner institutions will embed civic engagement into the learning environment and knowledge creation, to prepare students to become engaged citizens, and will construct new pathways for underserved communities, such as refugees, into higher education. OSUN thus will generate a dynamic ecosystem of deep partnerships that will spawn innovation, spread knowledge and learning organically, and amplify the impact of individual institutions.

OSUN plans to establish integrated academic programs on:

  • Open Society and Democracy
  • Critical Literacy and the Liberal Arts
  • Sustainability
  • Inequality
  • Human Rights
  • Transnational Politics
  • Arts and Open Society
