The Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that the recognition of the dignity of all members of the human family and of their equal and inalienable rights is the foundation of freedom, justice and universal peace. Today, we see how far can lead the ignorance of basic rights and freedoms by irresponsible politicians.

As a Belarusian university in exile in Lithuania, we understand more than anyone else the importance of European values and academic freedoms in building a harmonious world.

We call on all armies to cease fire immediately and to give the floor to diplomats and human rights defenders. The value of human rights is universal and should be the basis for negotiations between the parties.

We call on the academic community, researchers, lecturers and students, of all countries involved in the ongoing conflict not to deviate from humanistic ideals, to promote peace in the region and not to divide but to unite people.

We turn to colleagues who are under pressure or threats. We will try to give you all possible help and support. Together we can do a lot: let’s now help our governments to stop the war and bring our students back into the auditoriums.
