EHU expresses solidarity with detained alumnus Ihar Barysau

On March 21, the leader of the Belarusian Social Democratic Party (Assembly), alumnus of the European Humanities University (EHU), graduate of  the “Democracy and Civil Society” program (Class 2008) Ihar Barysau was detained in Minsk. The detention took place in front of the politician’s wife and his four-year-old child. Afterward, Ihar Barysau was taken to the Okrestina detention center, the lawyer was not allowed to see him. On March 22, Ihar Barysau was sentenced for 15 days of imprisonment.

Ihar Barysau is a well-known Belarusian politician and journalist, the chairman of the BSDP and chief editor of the BSDP analytical magazine “Position” since 2018, previously worked as the chief editor of the newspaper “OUR Mogilev” and magazine “Women of the BSDP”. Ihar Barysau is married and has two daughters.

The reason for the detention is unknown, but earlier this month the BSDP was one of three organizations that signed and submitted an application to hold a march and a concert on Freedom Day to the Minsk City Executive Committee.

EHU continues to monitor the events in Belarus and calls on the authorities to release all arbitrarily detained and convicted persons, among whom are students and graduates of the university.
