Two-Day Workshop in Vilnius on Identifying Heritage Value in a Historical Space

Join us for an engaging two-day workshop that explores how heritage value is embedded in spaces shaped by collective historic memory and identity. The workshop will be conducted by artists from Kaunas Vita Gelūnienė and Ed Carroll. This hands-on experience will combine ethnographic research, local knowledge, and collaborative mapping to deepen our understanding of public spaces and their cultural significance. Also, at the end of the workshop we going to discuss main findings of the collective student research “Vilnius Heritage as a Space for the Implementation of Cultural Rights”. 

Who Should Join

This workshop is ideal for anyone passionate about public spaces, heritage, and cultural rights. Whether you are a student, a researcher, an artist or simply curious, your perspectives are welcome! 

What to Expect

Participants will: 

  • Research: Analyze the historical, social, and natural aspects of a designated space.
  • Synthesize Knowledge: Share insights and integrate findings within groups.
  • Co-Design: Create a heritage value map through collaborative inquiry and shared experiences. 

One session includes an outdoor site visit, so please dress accordingly! The language – EN. 

Programme Overview

  • Day 1, January 29: Evening (16:50–19:00) – Introduction and practice exchange 
  • Day 2, January 30: 

Morning (10:30–12:30): Site visit and exercises

Afternoon (14:00–16:30): Feedback, group exchange, and findings presentation 

Evening (16.50–18:20): Research presentation 

Coffee and lunch on January 30 will be provided.

About the Facilitators 

Vita Gelūnienė and Ed Carroll are renowned community artists with deep ties to the Kaunas, Šančiai region. Vita led the EU Bauhaus award-winning Genius Loci Project, and Ed contributes actively to the Council of Europe Faro Convention Network. Together, they co-created the community opera “Cabbage Field,” performed at festivals in Luxembourg (2022) and Rotterdam (2023).
