EHU Summer University Call

European Humanities University calls for participation in the Summer University “Human Rights for Everyone: Restoring Justice. Case of Belarus” dedicated to the topic of human rights. The Summer University will be organized both in blended format and will take place from August 8 to August 14.

Demands to respect rights and human dignity have driven protests in Belarus 2020. In the country with almost 100 years of the Soviet and the post-Soviet era, where the concept of human rights did not work in its real meaning but in fact, represented demagogue and lies of the state propaganda, a high wave of self-identification of people as holders of rights and freedoms is a great phenomenon. Nowadays, Belarusians experience a default of the legal system: legal regulations and interpretation of rights and freedoms are highly centralized and politicized, misbalance of the state power serves as a basis for the full dependency of the judiciary system from execution. As a result, the extensive use of violence by enforcement agencies is followed by mocking courts against peaceful protesters. The trials are conducted with no procedural guarantees and resulted as a rule with long-term arrests in detention centers where ill-treatment conditions became “a norm”.

What is the aim of the Summer university?

To increase knowledge about human rights and ways of their defense, encourage the participation of youth in considering/solving the HR issues, specifically problems in delivering justice for protecting individual rights via applying constitutional/international provisions as normative frameworks and by referring/interpreting human rights´ values in the modern context.
