International seminar on Human Rights and Dirty War

European Humanities University (EHU), together with the Nordic Summer University, will host a winter session on “Human Rights and Dirty War” in Vilnius in the frame of the three-year Study Circle on International Relations and Human Rights.

The session will be held in Vilnius March 27-29, 2015. Applications may be submitted online by email to chrom @ cegetel.net. The deadline for applications is December 8.

Rooted in events in which Latin American government-sanctioned violence was used against dissidents and others citizens in the 1960s and 1980s, the use of the term “dirty war” became widespread in the field of political theory. Today, the practices of dirty wars have grown more intricate, using a variety of arguments involving human rights and humanitarian protection. The geography of “dirty warfare” is broadening, from the strategies of Eastern European states through the Middle East and African regions, to the United States, which combines counter-insurgency, arms and training support for local elements, and targeted killings by drones or through special operations.

A participant fee of 450 DKK will cover catering expenses. Travel and accommodation expenses will be covered by the organizers.
