From Paris to Vitebsk: Chagall in Belarus

The life of the artist Marc Chagall in Vitebsk after his return from Paris in 1914 will be the subject of the next EHU Public Conversation, “Marc Chagall: The Vitebsk Years (1914-1920)”.

Renowned Belarusian writer and scholar, Associate Professor at the European Humanities University Dr. Victor Martinovich will discuss his research on the life of the famous Belarusian-born painter on February 17 at 12:00 p.m. at Novotel Vilnius Centre. The conversation, moderated by Dr. Darius Udrys, EHU Vice-Rector for Development and Communications, will explore the personal challenges and disappointments Chagall experienced in his homeland as a returnee.

Martinovich started his research on Chagall in Minsk in 2000 and completed it last year in Vienna at the Institute for Human Sciences. The results will be published in his forthcoming book Rodina: Marc Chagall in Vitebsk in 1914-1920, available in August from EHU Press.

In addition to his research and teaching at EHU, Martinovich is an internationally-recognized writer of fiction. His books have been favorably reviewed in the New York Review of BooksNew York Times Book ReviewFrankfurter Allgemeine ZeitungTagesspiegelTimes Literary Supplement, and elsewhere. Nasha Niva, a Belarusian online media portal, designated his most recent novel, Mova, 2014’s Belarusian Book of the Year.
