Exploring Polarised Urban Transport Issues in London and the UK: Join Us Online!

Date: January 15, 2024

Time: 13:30 (Vilnius time)

Guest Speaker: Scott Rodgers (Birkbeck, University of London)

Moderator: Siarhei Liubimau (EHU Laboratory of Critical Urbanism)

In the build-up to the forthcoming London Mayoral and UK General Elections, sustainable urban transport policies have evolved into highly politicised ‘wedge issues.’ Join us for an insightful discussion unpacking the intricacies of these matters in our upcoming webinar.

Topic: Localised Online Misinformation: Unpacking Sustainable Urban Transport Issues in London and the UK

Scott Rodgers will delve into the polarising impact of seemingly technical and uncontroversial interventions like Low-Traffic Neighbourhoods (LTNs), Greater London’s Ultra-Low Emission Zone (ULEZ), and the concept of ’15-minute cities.’ Discover how these topics, once deemed non-controversial, have become central in cultural debates and even the subject of conspiracy theories.

The presentation will emphasize how understanding these developments requires examining the formation of diverse public perceptions around urban sustainability interventions. Scott will illustrate this with a case study of the ‘Mini Holland’ programme in the London Borough of Waltham Forest, followed by an outline of ongoing collaborative research studying online dynamics regarding LTNs, Greater London’s ULEZ, and 15-minute cities as they coincide with the upcoming London and UK elections.

Join Us for an Engaging Discussion on:

  • Formation of public opinions on urban sustainability
  • Impact of media in shaping urban policies
  • Online dynamics of controversies surrounding urban transport initiatives
