The Mission of European Humanities University for Democratic Transformation in Central and Eastern Europe: 30 Years of Activities

The 2022 academic year marks the 30th anniversary of EHU founding in 1992. For such a young and small institution, we are amazed at the contribution that EHU has made for democratic transformations in Eastern Europe. In the humanities and social sciences EHU has a presence that should make us all proud.

To help celebrate this achievement, we will host an academic conference EHU 30, on 6-7 October, 2022 at the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania (Katedros a. 4, Vilnius).

Against the background of the ongoing crisis of post-Soviet transformations, which have become a real challenge to the political systems of Europe and all world, an ambitious debate is needed about the path that liberal arts universities must go in order to remain able to shape generations of young people with independent thinking, creative imagination and the ability to put their ideas into practice.

The year EHU30 is also a year of commemoration of the  500th anniversary of the publication of “The Little Traveller’s Book” by Francysk Skaryna in Vilnius. Being in the center of Belarusian enligments EHU conceptualized its role in the topos where the history and contemporary reality closely bonds with each other, influencing the generations of youth in the region.

This debate should focus on the following questions:

  • What functions can and should be performed by universities in the societies of Eastern Europe today?
  • How do universities promote their social humanitarian functions while fulfilling their integral mission in human life and society in this region?
  • How does the educational and political component of EHU increase its influence on political transformations in the region of Eastern Europe?

Results: published conference materials for the participants and academia.
