Civil Resistance: Nonviolent Force for Democracy and Justice

The EHU Academic Department of Law and Centre for Constitutionalism and Human Rights, together with the International Center on Nonviolent Conflict (ICNC) is organizing an academic seminar on civil resistance for an intended audience of graduate students, junior faculty, and researchers with an interest in civil resistance and nonviolent conflict.

The goal of the seminar is to promote study, research, and teaching in the growing field of civil resistance studies. In the past four years ICNC organized more than 20 different academic seminars at various institutions of higher education around the world.

Topics that will be covered in the seminar include:

  • Power and dynamics of civil resistance movements
  • Effectiveness of civil resistance
  • Emergence and sustainability of civil resistance
  • Strategies and tactics of civil resistance
  • Civil resistance and repression
  • Civil resistance, nonviolent discipline, and radical flank
  • Third party actors and civil resistance
  • Civil resistance and defections
  • Civil resistance against corruption and violent non-state actors
  • Civil resistance and democratization

Instructors and Electronic Resources

The seminar will be conducted by ICNC instructors, including its staff and academic advisor—a veteran of civil resistance.

ICNC will also develop an e-class for registered participants who will attend the seminar with access to the digital and video resources that will remain open for participants to review and use after the end of the seminar. Participants will not be required to read or write anything prior to or after the seminar.

Date, Time and Location

The seminar will be hosted at the EHU Campus at Valakupiu, 5 in Vilnius, Lithuania.

Sessions will run from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on May 14 and May 15 and from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on May 16 (with short coffee/tea breaks, including 1.5 hour lunch breaks).

Only registered participants will be permitted to attend the seminar and attendance for the full length of the seminar is required.

Language Requirement

All sessions will be held in English. Good working knowledge of the English language is necessary.

No Cost

The seminar is free of charge, but participants traveling to Vilnius are expected to cover their own travel and lodging expenses. Lunch and refreshments will be provided for the duration of the seminar.

Deadline and How to Apply

As the number of participants is limited, all interested candidates are advised to apply as early as possible. The application deadline is April 25 and participation will be confirmed by the end of April.
