Dramatic events can be traumatizing. But they also open new opportunities for research. The autoethnographic approach helps transform traumatic experiences into anthropological observations. Some areas can only be studied through autoethnography, others – change when this method is applied. Self-reflection, which lies at the core of the autoethnographic method, paradoxically adds objectivity, while documenting emotions enriches the research.
