EHU expresses solidarity with alumnus and prisoner Wlodzimierz Malachowski

On March 1, alumnus of the European Humanities University (EHU), undergraduate of Cultural Heritage and Tourism program (Class 2013) Wlodzimierz Malachowski was sentenced to 3.5 years in prison according to Article 364 of the Criminal Code of Belarus by the Pershamajski district court of Vitebsk. Wlodzimierz, a father of two, is suffering from cancer. However, that didn’t stop the court ruling.

On September 13, 2020, Wlodzimierz Malachowski was detained in Vitebsk during the dispersal of protests march against rigged elections and spent 6 days in detention center.  The court decided to arrest Wlodzimierz and fine him in accordance with Article 23.34 of the Administrative Code. During the court session, it was revealed that Malachowski was allegedly recognized as a suspect in accordance with Article 364 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus – violence or threat of violence against an employee of the internal affairs bodies. A criminal case was opened against Wlodzimierz, an investigation was being carried out for several months, and in January 2021, Malachowski was detained as an accused. According to the sentence, Wlodzimierz has also to pay ca. 1,000 USD fine.

Сommunity of the EHU categorically condemns injustice of the court’s decision and expresses solidarity with the ones, who were arbitrarily detained and convicted in Belarus. Currently, two students and one alumnus of EHU are recognized by human rights organizations as political prisoners in Belarus.
