Lithuanian Government grants EHU with a status of “University in Exile”

On May 8, during a sitting of the Government of Lithuania, the European Humanities University (EHU) was granted the official status of a “University that operates in conditions of exile”.

Granting of the special status became possible thanks to the amendments that were made in May 2018 to the Lithuanian Law on Science and Higher Education. According to the Law, the Government may establish special conditions for the evaluation of education areas, real resources and for conducting an external institutional evaluation for Universities with special status. In addition, the Government establishes the conditions of operations of the Universities that are granted with a special status.

As the only private Belarusian University, EHU was forcibly closed in Minsk in summer 2004 by the Belarusian authorities. Thanks to the support of the international donor community and at the invitation of the Government of Lithuania, EHU restored its activities in Vilnius in autumn 2005.
