EHU Distinguished Alumna 2022 Tatsiana Kouzina

Tatsiana Kouzina is an EHU alumna (Master’s Program in Political Science, 2002), a researcher, an expert in the BIPART research project, and a co-founder of the School of Young Managers in Public Administration (SYMPA).

On the night of June 28-29, 2021, Tatsiana Kouzina was unlawfully detained in Minsk in connection with the initiation of a criminal case against her. After her arrest, Tatsiana was taken to a temporary detention center in Okrestina, and a few days later, she was transferred to Detention Center No. 1 on Volodarskogo Street.

Tatsiana Kouzina and political scientist Valeria Kostyugova were falsely accused of three articles of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus (Article 357-1 – conspiracy or other actions aimed at seizing power; Article 361-3 – encouraging actions aimed at harming the national security of Belarus; Article 130-3 – incitement of racial, national, religious, or other social hatred).

On July 20, 2021, Tatsiana Kouzina was recognized as a political prisoner.

On March 17, 2023, the Minsk City Court issued an unjust verdict to Tatsiana Kouzina and Valeria Kostyugova, sentencing them to 10 years of imprisonment in a medium-security penal colony.

The Supreme Court of the Republic of Belarus rejected Tatsiana’s appeal, upholding the verdict.

Tatsiana was transferred from Detention Center No. 1 to Correctional Colony No. 4 in Gomel to serve her sentence.

On August 31, 2023, the KGB included Tatsiana in the list of “individuals related to terrorist activities.”
