Competition for EHU Students and Faculty to Participate in a Study Tour of the European Parliament

Description:
The President of the European Parliament, Hans-Gert Pöttering, invites EHU students to take part in a study tour of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France. The tour includes: meeting with Members of the European Parliament interested in Belarusian issues, particularly the development of EHU; observation of the parliament plenary session in progress, presentation about the work of the European Parliament, and the chance to present ideas on the future of Belarus directly to President Pöttering.

Number of places:
A total of 19 candidates will be selected for participation:

  • 12 BA students (face-to-face and low residence)
  • 5 MA students
  • 1 BA lecturer
  • 1 MA lecturer

Additionally, alternates will be selected to replace candidates who drop out of the competition or are disqualified for other reasons.

Dates of participation:
The group departs on 8/9 March and returns on 11/12 March 2009.

Financial arrangements:
The European Parliament will cover the cost of participation.

Eligibility:
All BA and MA students and lectures registered in face-to-face and low residence education are eligible to compete for a place in the study tour.

Procedure:
The competition will be held in two stages:

1. Candidates must submit a complete application by 31 January 2009, including:

  • Expression of interest
  • CV in English
  • 500-word Essay in English on the topic, “The Importance of European Humanities University to Belarus”
  • Official confirmation of good academic standing (available in Room 102)
  • Copy of valid passport
  • Copy of valid Schengen visa or Lithuanian residence permit

2. Prospective candidates will be invited for an interview with the selection committee comprised of representatives of EHU administration and Student Government.

Additional considerations:

  • A complete application and supporting documents should be sent by e-mail to office@ehu.lt. Please write in the subject area “European Parliament Competition”.
  • Students are welcome to visit the students’ activities coordinator for questions or consultation concerning the competition (Room 120).
  • Participants will be asked to deliver a presentation about the visit to the academic community following their return.

Selection criteria:

  1. High academic standing
  2. Quality of essay
  3. Proficiency in English language
  4. Active participation in student life and international meetings at EHU

Timeline:

31 January - Deadline for applications (No applications will be considered after this date)

9-11 February - Interviews (in person or via Skype conference)

13 February - Results of competition announced

8-12 March - Visit to European Parliament

April - Group presentation to academic community
