2008 Scholars at Risk Network Membership Meeting

This June 20-21, the European Humanities University and the Scholars at Risk Network will host a meeting and symposium in Vilnius, Lithuania on "Defending the University: Academic Freedom in Central and Eastern Europe." The event aims to build solidarity among scholars and institutions and to identify practical approaches for defending the intellectual space.

HIGHLIGHTS

June 20th - 2008 Academic Freedom Workshop, SAR Network Meeting & Orientation for New/Prospective Members

  • Academic Freedom Workshop
  • Orientation for new member institutions and prospective members
  • Discussion of SAR activities and outreach, including new partner networks
  • Discussion of advocacy strategies, including academic freedom workshops
  • Nominations to the SAR Board and committees

June 21st – Symposium, "Defending the University: Academic Freedom in Central and Eastern Europe"

  • Case studies and personal experiences, including reports from Belarus, Russia,
  • Georgia, Azerbaijan, Moldova, Ukraine, Turkey, Uzbekistan
  • Examples of vehicles for responding to threats to higher education values
  • Plenary discussion and development of a follow-up plan of action
