International Summer School on Nation-Building in Belarus

The International Summer School “Belarus in the European Context: Current Discussions on Nation-Building” was held on August 2-8, 2010 in “Kernavės Bajorynė” (Širvintos district, Lithuania) with the participation of prominent researchers as Aleh Latyshonak and Yauhen Miranovich (Belostok), Valentin Akudovich, Ihar Babkou, Valer Bulgakau, Piotr Rudkouski, Zachar Sybieka (Minsk), Elena Temper (Leipzig), Siarhei Tokts (Grodno), Alvydas Nikzentaitis (Vilnius).

During the session the main historical and social theoretical approaches of analyzing the Belarusian nation-building in the European context were discussed:

  • Nation-Building: Role of Social Groups in Cities and Villages
  • Belarus in Search of National Idea
  • Belarusian Identity: History and Memory
  • Nationalism, Europeization, Democratization
  • Nation-Building in Belarus and Idea of Europe

According to Valentin Akudovich, prominent contemporary Belarusian philosopher, the entire generation of young talented researches has been existent in Belarus lately, able to develop the new aspects and trends of studying nation-building in Belarus.

The summer school was organized by the Institute for Historical Research on Belarus and Department of Philosophy of the European Humanities University.
