The Senate learned with indignation the actions of law enforcement agencies against activists of the civil initiative, “Speak the Truth”, on May 18.
Though not acting on behalf of EHU, members of our academic community were searched and questioned along with hundreds of others involved in the “Speak the Truth” coalition, particularly EHU Professors Svetlana Naumova and Andrey Vardomatskiy. We are in solidarity with our colleagues, and we lend our moral support.
On behalf of the academic community, the Senate expresses its concern about the violations of basic rights and freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution of Belarus. Such actions contradict the declarations of Belarusian authorities with regard to the democratization of Belarus.
