European Humanities University students‘ team made its debut in the Lithuanian Indoor Football Second League in the 2009/2010 academic year.
The core of the team consists of Belarusian students who came to study at European Humanities University, which was closed in Minsk in 2004 and re-launched its activities in Vilnius in 2005.
The idea to promote active leisure time came from Gediminas Kapočius, Director of the EHU Finance Department. “At first we considered other sports like basketball and volleyball. However, Belarusians are best at football, same as Lithuanians are best at basketball,” said EHU team leader G. Kapočius. “We are the newcomers to the Lithuanian Indoor Football Second League, so we are not ambitious this season thought we would be glad to qualify for the Play-offs”.
According to G. Kapočius, some Lithuanians from Vilnius Football School will join the students of EHU this year.
Romas Garnys whose passion is sports, in general, and football, in particular, is coaching the EHU footballers. After graduating from Vilnius Football School in 1973, R. Garnys actively took up sports, later worked as a coach for a long time as well as was involved in administrative-organizational work not only in football but also in volleyball and baseball.
“Not long ago I came to EHU. I was eager to join this initiative. I have gained quite a lot of experience that I am willing to pass to the younger generation,” said R. Garnys.
According to the coach, the team is made of amateur players; however, the individual level of each of them is quite high. They usually train two or three times and play once a week.
“I am glad that students who spend most of the days in lecture halls don’t lack time and enthusiasm to work intensively and seek for great results in football. I believe that the joint team effort can lead us to good results in future,” said the coach.
EHU indoor football team
The EHU students’ team is competing in the Lithuanian Indoor Football Second League Group B together with „VDA-Užupis“, „Kiemas“, „Vievio žiedas“, GMIFO, Eišiškės, „Credit Info Lietuva“ and „Pietų IV“.
The team will have other voices of encouragement – a cheerleading team is being formed to support the EHU footballers at games planned this year.
