Leader of conservatives in the Nordic Council: “EHU is a genuine example of the institution-building”

On August 21 European Humanities University (EHU) hosted a delegation of the Conservative group in the Nordic Council. Vice Chair of the Governing Board Eva Srejber, President Prof. Anatoli Mikhailov and Chief of Academic Affairs Prof. Aliaksandr Kalbaska presented EHU’s achievements and the prospects of its further development to MPs.

The Conservative group in the Nordic Council is composed of the MPs from 7 centre-right wing political parties from the Nordic countries. The inter-parliamentary group consisting of 16 MPs and led by Hans Wallmark (Moderaterna, Sweden) held a meeting with the leadership of EHU and discussed avenues of collaboration between the University and the Nordic cooperation.

Starting from the early years of EHU re-location to Vilnius the Nordic Council of Ministers (NCM) and the Nordic Council played a substantial role in facilitating the renewal of University’s operations and its mission. Namely, since 2007 and until a sudden death in 2011 the former NCM Secretary General and Governor of Stockholm Per Unckel served as the first Chair of the EHU Governing Board. During the meeting representatives of the Nordic ruling and opposition conservatives parties expressed sincere interest in achievements of University graduates, unique opportunities offered through the liberal arts model of education and the civic engagement of EHU students.

After the meeting with the University leadership Chairman of the Conservative group and member of the Swedish Riksdag Mr Wallmark said: “The European Humanities University represents a remarkable example of the genuine institution-building aimed at the development of the civil society in Belarus. Our delegation was pleased to learn about EHU’s achievements, since University’s establishment in Minsk in 1992 and to know the further horizons of University’s development”.

“EHU’s values of free inquiry, critical thinking and personal responsibility are the core values of the Western academic tradition and I am pleased that Nordic countries are supporters of this unique University,” added Mr Wallmark.
