EHU students developed a Core Curriculum-based computer game

The “First Year Seminar: Introduction to Humanities” is the essential element of the European Humanities University (EHU) Core Curriculum, which was developed in collaboration with Bard liberal arts partner network and introduced into EHU curriculum starting from AY 2016/17.

The “First Year Seminar: Introduction to Humanities” offers a wide range of student assignments, which include preparation of a creative project. This is a way of putting students knowledge into practice, while a creative project should be based on the literature, key texts, ideas and problems discussed during the course. Nevertheless, this assignment allows students to use their imagination to the fullest. Every fulfilled project proves that Humanities and social sciences have a practical dimension and provide tangible public benefit.

EHU first year students – Alina Shymanskaya, Anastasiya Tumel, Darya Vilchynskaya, Katsiaryna Shafranovich, Marya Stsiopkina, Volha Zhohla and Stanislau Fralov – developed a visual novel in a form of a computer game, which resembles an illustrated story, while its plot depends on the user choices. This multimedia project interprets the texts by H. Hesse, L. Tolstoy, etc., discussed by the students during the First Year Seminar. In every chapter, the reader faces challenges and dilemmas of the real life: relationship with the society, friendship, love, family, and professional choice. Depending on the answers, the reader receives a unique result, which reflects what literature character he or she resembles the most and what values are his or her priority.

The primary aim of the project is to provoke readers – especially young to ponder upon their life and life choices. Moreover, this computer game aims at popularizing classical literature and philosophical texts from the First Year Seminar anthology.

The computer game is available for download (in Russian).

The implementation of the project was made possible thanks to the financial support from Bard College.
