EHU student is arrested for 12 days after peaceful demonstration in Minsk

On March 15 series of mass protests against so-called “welfarism tax” took place in Belarus major cities. Peaceful demonstrations were followed by unprecedented massive arrests unseen since the December 2010 Presidential elections. Among detained – European Humanities University’s (EHU) undergraduate student Anastasiya Ranko.

Anastasiya Ranko is a third-year low-residence undergraduate student of the Media and Communications program. As hundreds of other protesters, Anastasiya was detained by civilian-dressed Belarusian law-enforcement agents on March 15. As a result of the trial, led by Judge Tatiana Rak in the Central District Court of Minsk, Anastasiya was sentenced to a 12 days administrative arrest.

EHU faculty, students, and staff express solidarity with the detained fellow student. University leadership is following the case closely and maintains the contact with the detained student’s family.
