Seminar ‘Field Life’: Two Events in One Day

On November, 13 the third season of the seminar of empirical studies at the European Humanities University (EHU) begins with the support by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency.

Event One: EXHIBITION

At 5 p.m. there will be the opening of the exhibition “Field Life: QR-Code” in the hall on the second floor. We present a dozen of posters that are codes connecting you to the creative archive of seminars uploaded on Youtube. For three months Yuliya Hradovich and Sophija Savtchouk have been cutting audio recordings, assembling montage sequences, and proposing ways of translating audio in a visual form. Lidiya Sergei has developed the project design and put these ideas into a series of images that Irina Chaika has brought into motion creating animation. This enormous undertaking has been planned, inspired, and guided through all obstacles by Galina Orlova. The seminar archive is accessed with the help of quick response codes. These codes are not only the instrument of a transmedia assemblage, but also the metaphor of efforts to translate, understand, and interpret that any intellectual participation require. Going to the exhibition, don’t forget to install QR-code reader on your gadgets!

Event Two: LECTURE

At 6 p.m. in the room 112 Natalja Saveljeva (School of perspective studies at Tyumen State University and Laboratory of Public Sociology) gives a talk “An undercover sociologist”. The presentation deals with problems of fieldwork in the context of war and is based on the results of studies done by the Laboratory of Public Sociology in 2014-17 in Donbass. Natalja and her colleagues conducted a series of qualitative in-depth interviews with participants and witnesses of military actions (combatants, state officials, representatives of local population). How are reliability and relevance of the data influenced by the war context?  How to get the access to such a field and to cope with its difficulties? What ethical challenges do researchers of war face in post-soviet space? On Monday, November 13, we will discuss these questions.
