EESC invites EHU students to participate in the simulation “Vilnius Model United Nations 2017”

On October 24, during the 72nd anniversary of United Nations, Eastern Europe Study Centre (EESC), together with Swedish InstituteSwedish Embassy in Lithuania and Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs are organizing UN simulation “Vilnius Model UN 2017” (VMUN’17).

Model UN has long-lasting traditions, being organized for the first time in 1949 and from the beginning raising the future leaders of countries and international organizations. Among them, there was Former Secretary General of UN, Ban Ki Moon, as well as US Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer, National Security Advisor in the United States President Obama administration Thomas Donilon.

Participants of VMUN’17 will have to become leaders of countries for one day and use their diplomatic knowledge while solving international conflicts and bringing peace to the Middle East. Before starting the simulation, every delegation will have to explore the current situation and formulate the position of how their delegation is proposing to solve the conflict in the Middle East and defend the position later, during the simulation.

The topic of 2017 Vilnius Model UN is Solving the Conflict in Syria. In recent years this topic remains on the top of International agenda and rapid changes in Syria and beyond require constant rethinking – it is both actual and full of challenges, which VMUN’17 participants will have to tackle. To make it more challenging and interesting, 25 delegations out of 50 delegates will be formed.

NB! EHU students are welcomed to participate. Those wanting to represent a delegation at “Vilnius Model UN 2017” must register by October 9th by filling the registration form. The participants will be informed about the updates in the event page on Facebook.

The simulation is going to take place on October 23-24 in Vilnius. The organizers and their partners commit to funding the expenses of accommodation and meals, as well as the refund of journey costs for those living further away from Vilnius. The simulation will be held in the English language.

Everyone will receive an email confirmation once they have registered successfully. The selection will be done according to the quality of the application. Delegates are then expected to submit one position paper per delegation to sarunas.legatas@eesc.lt by October 17th.
